A petition has been filed in the Lahore High Court (LHC) against the social video app, TikTok, saying that it is promoting pornography and pedophilia among the youth.
Justice Shaheen Mubeen of the LHC, while hearing the petition on Monday, sought replies from the federal government and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).
The petitioner, advocate Nadeem Sarwar contended that the app is disastrous for the young generation; hence, it should be banned in the country.
Not only TikTok wastes time and money, but it also promotes obscenity and vulgarity in society. Moreover, it also inflicts online harassment and blackmailing.
The plaintiff requested the court to order the telecommunication watchdog to place a ban on TikTok. He also asked the court to direct the government to enact the Privacy Protection Act to save the youth from the effects of social media.
If not permanently, a ban should be placed on the application and spread of its videos until the court decides the case, he pleaded.
The court then adjourned the case till December 12 and asked both PTA and the government to submit replies on the next hearing.
Note that the Chinese video app has previously faced bans in several Asian countries including Bangladesh, Indonesia, and India.
