Youth group stages candlelight protest in Srinagar

Srinagar, February 25, 2013 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, a Valley-based activists group, the Global Youth Foundation (GYF), held a candle-light demonstration at Press Colony in Srinagar to press for return of Afzal Guru’s body to Kashmir from New Delhi’s Tihar Jail.

The protestors demanded independent investigation into Afzal Guru’s letter to his counsel in which he had named some police officers and forces for their involvement in attack on Indian Parliament.

“We appeal the Government of India to order a thorough and independent investigation into Guru’s testimony about involvement of some police officers and forces for their alleged role in Parliament attack. It will end the culture of unaccountability and impunity in the armed forces,” said Chairman of Global Youth Foundation, Touseef Raina.

He said that it was unfortunate that Afzal Guru’s family was not only denied a chance to challenge the rejection of his mercy appeal but also a prior notice of his execution. “The least his wife, young son and brothers deserved as citizens a chance to meet the condemned prisoner,” he added.

The Global Youth Foundation in a similar protest at the same spot in November 2012 had appealed to the President of India, who is the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces, to review the system of rewards and incentives for killings in the light of the misuse of this system in certain cases
