Year 2013 will be commencement year of Karachi Circular Railway: Karachi Metropolitan Corporation


Karachi, February 07, 2013 (PPI-OT): Administrator KMC Muhammad Hussain Syed said 2013 will be the commencement year of Karachi Circular Railway. Other projects will also be initiated this year with the cooperation of Japan. He said this on a meeting with the Senior Financial Advisor of JICA for South Asia Mr. Akitoshi Lio and other officers in the JICA office in Tokyo.

The special meeting was called to review the start of Karachi Circular Railway Project during which Administrator Karachi asked Mr. Akitoshi to visit Karachi. He informed the JICA office bearers about the Japanese companies operating in Pakistan out of which he said 49 companies were Karachi based.

Administrator Karachi said one billion dollar trade was done between Japan and Pakistan last year and more than 70 investors had expressed their desire to invest in Karachi during a seminar held by Bank of Tokyo.

He said various Japanese companies dealing in automobiles, heavy machinery and electronics have desired to work in these trades. Administrator Karachi said Japan has excelled in the technology and production and his visit was aimed at meeting with the stakeholders of Karachi Circular Railway Project and the implementation of their suggestion in this connection.

He said the KCR route will start and end at Drigh Road via Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Nipa Roundabout, Yasinabad, Liaquatabad, Nazimabad, SITE area, Baldia Town, Lyari, Tower, Karachi Cantt, Shaheed-e-Millat Road and Karsaz. Electrical train will be used for this project for which various power projects were also being worked out.

He said this project will be runby Karachi Urban Transport Corporation under the basis of Public Private Partnership which will be coordinated by JICA and its governing body will be represented by Pakistan Railway, Sindh Government and KMC. Administrator Karachi said Karachi Circular Railway would not only make the traveling inside the city but also provide considerable convenience to people working in industrial and suburban areas of city.

He said Karachi holds much importance in the region and it enjoys the status of the backbone of the national economy. The city population has reached the 20million mark and the city contributes 67 percent in the national exchequer. Administrator Karachi said the seven industrial zones in Karachi were playing important role in the progress of city, province and the country but the city lack an effective, safe and convenient public transport system.

The KCR projects which started with the technical and financial help from Japan would provide better and efficient travel facilities to citizens of Karachi and ensure more job opportunities to people which would ultimately raise their standard of living.
