Punjab International Sports Festival set to start Wednesday

Lahore, November 05, 2012 (PPI-OT): The final leg of the youth activity, the Punjab International Sports Festival 2012 is to roll into action with formal opening ceremony tomorrow (Wednesday). The teams for participation in this level of activity has started to arrive in the city and the rugby team of Cambodia was the first international team to reach the city to be part of the international festival while a delegation of Indian business community under the leadership of Indian Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Badal Singh have reached Lahore and would be among the guests during the Festival while the contingent of sportsmen will reach on November 6.

The football teams of Sri Lanka and Yemen will reach Pakistan today (Tuesday) while the teams of Serbia, the first ever European football team to Pakistan, and the team of Mangolia are reaching here on Wednesday.

The vision of youth development put forth by the Government of Punjab in the youth policy was implemented in letter and spirit by Sports Board Punjab with the main credit going to its chairman Hamza Shahbaz (MNA), organizing secretary Rana Mashood Ahmed Khan, who is also Deputy Speaker Punjab Assembly, Director General Sports and Youth Affairs Usman Anwar and his team.

After passing through six phases of Punjab Youth Festival 2012 from Neighbourhood and Village, Union Council, Tehsil, District, Division and Provincial Levels, there is now going to be Inter-provincial Games and Punjab International Sports Festival 2012 which will also have Indo-Pak Games and Deaf and Dump Dosti Cup. And the activity of this upper order will have the participation of 1381 athletes from 24 countries.

There is going to be competitions in baseball, football, fist ball, touch ball (male and female), ju-jitsu, rugby and Kabaddi events, the Indo-Pak events are kabaddi, wrestling, tug of war and hockey while the Dosti Cup, cricket Kabaddi, wrestling, badminton, table tennis and chess have been lined up for encounters.

The International Festival will formally start on November 8 after Chief Minister Punjab Mian Shahbaz Sharif will declared the events open on November 7’s opening ceremony. Indian Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukbir Singh Badal on arrival said that he has come to Pakistan with a message of peace and love. “My visit is not political but is of developing love and harmony and promote sports among the two neighbouring countries. The International Festival will start with judo competition at Allama Iqbal Medical College and the entire activity will continue till November 15.
