No nation can properly progress in the absence of a sound human capital base and education

Islamabad: In today’s world, no nation can properly progress in the absence of a sound human capital base and education and higher education and technology are essential for a dignified survival and progress of nations. This was stated by Ms. Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari, while addressing at a function arranged by Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (SZABIST) to mark the Independence Day of Pakistan celebrations, here in Dubai.

The event was also attended by Ms. Asifa Bhutto Zardari, His Excellency Ambassador Jamil Ahmed Khan, Dr Faiz Ishaq, Head of Campus, Dr. Saqib Razavi, President, SZABIST, members of SZABIST’s Local Management Committee, Journalists and a large number of Pakistani Community living in UAE.

Ms. Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari said that SZABIST is well known for its educational endeavours, and is also currently engaged in providing job skills and intermediate education to people in remote areas of Pakistan. She said that the idea is to be able to bring education and skills to the people who otherwise would not have had the opportunity to improve their lives.

She said that SZABIST has also established a centre for research on renewable energy. This centre has successfully produced a wind turbine, which will be able to generate energy for a village in Sindh and beyond.

In addition, SZABIST has also established a centre for sustainable development, which helps provide necessities including basic health care, clean water and education, she added. She said SZABIST has established state of the art fully functional laboratories, including a stem cell research centre. The aim of this lab is to locally produce artificial skin in order to help burn victims.

Ms. Bakhtawar Bhutto revealed that SZABIST is currently working on three large projects: first is to build campus for Karachi, the other is a medical complex in Gharo and finally building a university for engineering in Karachi.

She expressed the hope that this will gives a better perspective of how SZABIST is implementing the vision of her mother. She said she would like to see SZASBIT to be able to provide all with a platform to strengthen community relations and as the only offshore Pakistani educational institute (in the world), she pressed upon the Pakistani Community to take advantage of SZABIST’s presence in Dubai and explore the possibilities of greater cooperation between SZABIST and the community.

In the end, Ms. Bakhtawar thanked the participants for attending the Pakistan’s Independence Day celebration at the beautiful Dubai campus of SZABIST.

Earlier, His Excellency Ambassador of Pakistan Mr. Jamil Ahmed Khan in his address said that the SZABIST is associated with the glorious name of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and the visionary Bhutto had given science and technology his highest priority and attention. He said that the national and international acknowledgement of SZABIST as a distinguished seat of learning is a tribute to the dynamic leadership of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

The Ambassador said that the government is committed to seeing education, especially higher education, flourish in the country and would like to encourage private sector to work side by side with the public sector to invest in education and promote research and development.

He said that in today’s world, no nation can properly progress in the absence of a sound human capital base and education. Especially technical education is the key to a successful human resource development. Access of people to advanced knowledge and skills has emerged as the single most competitive advantage at the global level, he added.

He said that higher education and technology are essential for a dignified survival and progress of nations and knowledge, both as an input and as an output, is the key source of long-term growth and development. Today’s buzz term ‘knowledge based economy’ is used in this very context.

He said that the developed nations have made their place in the global community on the basis of realization of importance of knowledge and they consider the degree of their success directly proportional to the strategic investment in education, particularly in science and technology.

The Ambassador emphasised said that Shaheed BB was a symbol of national unity and integration and the best tribute that the nation can pay to her is an allegiance to the principals which she espoused vigorously in her life and the values she promoted consistently in her career. He said that Shaheed Benazir Bhutto had a vision and the passion for the promotion of education in the country.

He said that the present democratic government under the visionary leadership of President Asif Ali Zardari is committed to see education, especially higher education, flourish in the country and would like to encourage the private sector to work side by side with the public sector to invest in education and promote research and development in higher education, especially technical and vocational education.

The Ambassador said that Pakistan is created on democratic norms and democracy is very vital for the development and prosperity of Pakistan but unfortunately the democratic setup was dislodged by the dictators in the past many times that has directly affected the country’s prosperity. He said that President Asif Ali Zardari has introduced a culture of tolerance and reconciliation in Pakistani politics.

He said that due to tolerance and reconciliation strategy today all the major political parties are in government in all the four provinces and the centre and working for strengthen the democracy in the Country.

He said that SZABIST is contributing effectively to the cause of national building with a total commitment to quality education and research, carried out with a missionary spirit and zeal. He expressed hope that SZABIST will continue to promote the culture of value added professionalism and technical expertise in the same spirit.

Dr. Faiz, Deen, SZABIT, Dr. Saqib Razavi, President, SZABIST in their address said that SZABIST by the vision of its founder, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto is providing opportunities for higher education to help build an intellectual class that is empowered with knowledge and that is an asset to any society and a source of pride for Pakistan where ever they may be.

They said that SZABIST has matured into a strong multidisciplinary institution and its degree is fully recognized by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan and all over the world. They emphasised that most of all, in terms of cost of education, it is the most competitive institution of higher education in Dubai. It is providing the same quality and level of education as other institutions, but merely at one-third of the cost.
