Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar meets United States Assistant Secretary of State on human rights


Islamabad, February 07, 2013 (PPI-OT): US Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labour Mr. Micheal Posner called on the Advisor to Prime Minister on Human Rights, Mr. Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar. A variety of issues relating to human rights came under discussion.

The Advisor briefed him about various initiatives taken by the present government to improve the human rights situation in Pakistan. While pointing out international commitments, the Advisor said, out of Nine International covenants Pakistan has signed and ratified Seven.

He further said that four of the seven have been ratified during the tenure of the present democratically elected government. The Advisor added that also these conventions were not only be ratified but would also be implemented through domestic legislation.

He apprised him about recent legislative initiatives of the present government for addressing human rights issues, such as establishment of financially and administratively autonomous National Commission for Human Rights and National Commission on the Status of Women. He informed that the bill on child rights is also ready and will be introduced in the next cabinet meeting for further process. The Advisor stated that the bills regarding Christian and Hindu marriages have also been prepared and will soon be presented in cabinet for approval.

The Advisor also told the Assistant Secretary of State that the appointment of human rights defenders is also under consideration for further promotion and protection of human rights in Pakistan.

Moreover, the Advisor raised his concerns on the US policy of drone attacks in the tribal area of Pakistan and said that these attacks are not only counterproductive but also cause loss of lives of innocent people.

The Assistant Secretary of State appreciated the efforts of the Advisor for taking effective steps for improving human rights situation in Pakistan and showed resolve to cooperate in the field of human rights issues to which the Advisor agreed.
