Ministry of National Food Security and Research to continue monitoring wheat position


Islamabad, February 07, 2013 (PPI-OT): “Wheat review Committee is mandated to review overall wheat availability and public sector wheat stock position in the country, thus Ministry of NFS and R in consultation with the concerned stakeholders will continue monitoring wheat position regularly”, said Addl. Secretary (NFS and R), Mr. Abdul Basit Khan.

He was chairing the meeting of Wheat Review Committee, held here today. Maj. Gen. M. Tauqeer Ahmed, Managing Director PASSCO, representatives of provincial food departments as well as senior officials of the Ministry of National Food Security and Research were also present on the occasion.

The current wheat stocks position was reviewed by the committee which stands at 4.8 million tons, showing a surplus wheat stocks’ position in the country. There was across the board appreciation over the Government’s decision to allow PASSCO to offload one million wheat stocks in the domestic market at reduced prices of Rs1050/- to Rs 1100/- per 40 kg. Additional Secretary was briefed that the move had greatly helped in improving wheat supplies and stabilization of wheat and flour prices throughout the country.

Mr. Abdul Basit, Addl. Secretary (NFS and R) was briefed about the impact of support price over wheat sowing. MD, PASSCO Maj. Gen. Tauqeer mentioned that federal Government’s decision of enhancing wheat support price from Rs. 1050/- to Rs. 1200/- per 40 kg for wheat crop 2012-13 had an encouraging effect on wheat sowing and according to initial estimates wheat had been sown on 8.6 million hectares.

Additional Secretary said, “It is an appreciable achievement as after announcement of increased support price it has been observed that farmers have enhanced area under wheat cultivation which will ensure the sustained wheat supply in the country as well as it’ll help stabilization of the wheat prices in the consumer market”.

During the meeting the wheat procurement targets for 2013 were also discussed and provinces and PASSCO agreed for the following tentative procurement targets; Punjab and Sindh agreed to procure 4.5 million tons and 1.3 million tons respectively whereas KPK and Balochistan agreed on 0.50 million tons and 0.10 million tons respectively. PASSCO showed willingness to procure 2.60 million tons for the year 2013.

Issues relating to wheat such as stocks availability, market mechanism under the forces of demand and supply, net effect of the fixation of support price on consumer and impact of wheat export on local market were brought under discussion.
