Message from Prime minister on Independence Day

Islamabad: The 14th of August is an historic day when under the inspiring leadership of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Muslims of the sub-continent added a glorious chapter of sacrifice, commitment and self-less devotion to the annals of history. The establishment of Pakistan was a culmination of the Muslims’ relentless political and constitutional struggle to preserve their cultural identity, heritage, civilization including the protection of their political and economic rights.

The tyrannical opposition of the Indian National Congress and the British could not deter the Muslims from realizing the dream of Allama Dr Muhammad Iqbal for an independent state where they could live their life at individual and collective levels according to their traditions.

It is a matter of immense pride that Pakistan came into being as a result of democratic, political and constitutional struggle and Pakistan’s future lies in democracy and representative rule. At a time when the people are celebrating this auspicious day both inside and outside Pakistan with traditional zeal and zest, the country is up against multiple challenges. I call it ‘defining phase’ because many positive developments have taken place in the country, which have the potential of putting our polity back on track as envisaged by the Founding Father.

Pakistan has successfully taken on the challenge of terrorism and extremism under the present democratic government in line with our national interest and global commitments. The government, with the support of people of Pakistan, has made significant strides in fighting out terrorism. Pakistani nation and its security forces have rendered huge sacrifices both in man and material to protect the national identity and preserve the sovereignty of Pakistan against all odds.

By the grace of God, Pakistan has a functioning democracy, independent judiciary, and a vocal parliament. Similarly robust media, assertive civil society and enlightened middle class are the manifestation of a vibrant Pakistan.

The Parliament approved historic constitutional amendments, which have devolved the administrative and political power to the federating units. The passage of the 18th, 19th Constitutional Amendments and consensual adoption of the 7th NFC Award are some of the historic milestones achieved by the present democratic government, which would surely strengthen federation. All institutions i.e. parliament, judiciary and executive are on the same page to strengthen democratic institutions in the country.

Pakistan is a gift of God and it is the sacred duty of all of us to work hard for its progress and development in order to make qualitative difference in the lives of people. It is worth mentioning that Pakistan was achieved in the holy month of Ramadan and we are lucky that the Independence Day has fallen in the blessed month this year as well. If we forge unity in our ranks, there is no reason why we cannot surmount the current challenges in line with the vision of the Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

I am reminded of the Quaid-e-Azam’s message to the nation on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha in 1947, “My message to you all is of hope, courage and confidence. Let us mobilize all our resources in a systematic and organized way and tackle the grave issues that confront us with grim determination and discipline worthy of a great nation.”

I would like to congratulate the people of Pakistan and the expatriate community living abroad on the Independence Day.
