Khartoum welcomes South Sudan’s peace initiative in conflict-hit areas

Sudan has welcomed the initiative by South Sudanese President Salva Kiir for mediation between the government and the People's Movement (North Sector) to reach a lasting solution to the conflict in the regions of South Kordofan and Blue Nile (also known as the Two Areas).

Speaking to Sudan News Agency (SUNA), Sudanese State Minister at the Ministry of Information Mamoun Hassan said that Kiir's initiative is not an alternative to the role of the African Union and the roadmap, signed by the People's Movement and the government, but rather considered as a support to it. He also affirmed Khartoum's adherence to the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD).

The Sudanese official said that the initiative of President Kiir is giving new momentum to the previous initiatives and agreements as well as the local and regional endeavors to achieve inclusive deal and settlement for the issue of the Two Areas. He stressed that the issues of Sudan and its future have been decided at the Comprehensive National Dialogue Conference as its recommendations and national document have become the pillars for effecting construction and national accord.

The state minister further expressed his country's welcome for the announcement by members of the People's Movement to support the initiative of the South Sudanese president toward pushing forward the peace process in Sudan.
