Government believes in freedom of press: Irfan Siddiqui


Islamabad, August 10, 2015 (PPI-OT): “Present political Government believes in the freedom of press and is very keen to address the concerns of print media”. This was stated by Mr. Irfan Siddiqui, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on National affairs at a luncheon meeting held with the Executive Committee of APNS today.

Mr. Irfan Siddiqui appreciated the role of APNS in raising the issues, that he termed as irritants, being faced by print media at different forums. He invited Presidents of APNS and CPNE to nominate their representatives for a committee that will be constituted by M/O,B and NH to address the irritants and the issues facing the print media. Further, he said that APNS should also come forward and help the government in resolution of all the longstanding issues of print media industry.

He stressed that the committee should not be informal but hold regular meetings and come up with practicable solutions. He mentioned that earlier with the help of PBA, the ministry was able to draft a comprehensive code of conduct for the electronic media which has been endorsed by the Supreme Court too. He added that with sincerity, dedication and resolve all issues facing the print media can be addressed.

Finally, he assured the APNS that the Government will work with the media for providing a healthy environment for freedom of press in the country for which the Prime Minister has repeatedly shown his resolve. Earlier Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Mohammad Azam and Rao Tehsin Ali Khan, Principal Information Officer, deliberated on the concerns raised by the APNS.
