Islamabad: The Minister for Finance and Economic Affairs Dr. Abdul Hafeez Shaikh while presiding here a meeting today, discussed the progress of two projects “lowering of water in Attaabad landslide dam” and “re alignment of different sections of Karakorum Highway (KKH)”. He stressed the timely completion of these projects and discussed the different financial matters faced by FWO, NHA and other concerned department regarding these projects, in which cost of lowering of water in Attaabad landslide dam is Rs.660 million.
A massive Landslide occurred on 4th July 2010 near the village of Attaabad approximately 109 km North East of Gilgit city, causing heavy loss to life and property. The landslide having a volume of over 40 million cubic meters completely blocked the Hunza River which resulted in formation of lake on the upstream side and also covered about 2.0 km long stretch of Karakorum Highway (KKH) halting all kind of vehicular traffic. Currently Attabad Lake and damaged road network of KKH are the major obstacles for the trade between Pakistan and China. The completion of the above mentioned projects are the key factors in order to utilize the existing trade and energy potential of Gilgit Baltistan.
Secretary communication, Director General FWO, Secretary Finance, Secretary Planning, Secretary Economic Affairs and other high officials of concerned ministries/departments were also present in the meeting.
