Dr Mohammad Abdur Rab passes away in Canada

 

Islamabad, August 10, 2015 (PPI-OT): Dr Mohammad Abdur Rab, one of Pakistan’s leading medical scientists, passed away in Stoney Creek, Ontario, Canada, after bravely fighting against cancer for over 26 months. Undoubtedly Pakistan’s top-most epidemiologist, Dr M Abdur Rab has made great contribution to Pakistan.

He was the Senior Scientific Officer responsible for the World Health Organisation’s Tropical Disease Programme in Pakistan, and later established the National Guinea Worm Eradication Programme, which was very successful and acknowledged by former US President Jimmy Carter.

Dr Abdur Rab infused new life into the Health Services Academy in Pakistan, and with assistance of the German government, established it as Pakistan’s premier Public Health Institute. Moving on to the World Health Organization, Dr Abdur Rab was an epidemiologist par excellence in the WHO’s Regional Headquarters n Cairo, and later became the WHO Representative in Sudan.

Dr Abdur Rab was an extremely courageous, brilliant and witty physician and epidemiologist, who is well known internationally. He mentored many physicians and scientists, the world over. He is survived by his wife, Dr Shahida Abdur Rab, a former leading gynaecologist of Islamabad, daughter Faiza, and sons Samad and Fahad, all of whom were by his bedside as he walked into heaven. Dr. Abdur Rab will be sorely missed and forever remembered by his admirers, near and dear ones.
