Chairman Senate Hosts Reception for Participants of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association

Islamabad: A reception for delegates of 57th Conference of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) was hosted by Chairman Senate Mr. Farooq H. Naik here Sunday who is currently heading an eleven member parliamentary delegation of Pakistan participating in the Annual Conference of CPA, says a press release received from London here today.

Members of the Pakistan delegation include Mr. Faisal Karim Kundi, Deputy Speaker National Assembly, Mr. Aslam Bhutani, Senator Tariq Azeem, Senator Ishaq Dar, Senator Syed Nayyer Hussain Bukhari, Senator Waqar Ahmed, Ms. Kashmala Tariq, MNA, Ms. Nafisa Shah, MNA, Mr. Khurram Jehangir Watto, MNA and Mr. Ramesh Lal, MNA,

A large number of delegates including speakers of parliaments of various countries and current Chairman of CPA Mohammad Shafie Apdal attended the reception. Speaker of parliament of Sri Lanka Mr. Chamal Rajapaksa, members of the parliament from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Caribbean, Africa and Asian countries attended the reception.

This year election of the Chief of Executive Committee of CPA will also take place. The Chairman is elected for a term of three years.

Year 2011 has been designated by Commonwealth Secretariat as year of “Women as Agents of Change” in this connection a special conference on the subject was also held on the occasion of Small Branches Conference on Sunday. A dinner was also hosted by Rt. Hon Baroness Hayman. Lord Speaker and President of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians in this connection.

The conference will be inaugurated on Monday by HRH Princes Royal. There will be number of workshops during the conference including Climate Change, Parliament and Reforms – Raising the Benchmarks, Commonwealth Initiatives in Handing Migration Issues, Enhancing Good Governance and Accountability: Improve Standards of Probity and performance, The World Economy and Obstacles facing the Commonwealth, Women as Agents of Change: Where Are We Now? The Way Forward, Technological Threats to International, National and Personal Security, and The Role of Parliamentarians in Advancing the Transfer of Agricultural Technology and Research.
