Arab League chief affirms importance of developing ties with OSCE

 

Cairo (UNA-OIC) � Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit met here on Saturday Secretary General of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Thomas Greminger.

During the meeting, Aboul Gheit discussed with OSCE chief means of developing dialogue and promoting cooperation between the two bodies during the coming phase in light of the presence of joint important priorities and challenges.

Arab League Secretary General's spokesman Mahmoud Afifi said in a statement that Aboul Gheit affirmed during the talks the importance of developing cooperation relations between the Arab League and the OSCE to deal with the qualitative change in the main threats, particularly the escalating threat of terrorism and extremism as well as the expanding circle of the non-organized crime.

Afifi added that the Arab League secretary general underlined the need for strong support by the European side for the Palestinian cause and the legitimate rights of the people of Palestine, including backing the Palestinian and Arab position on the issue of Jerusalem.

The spokesman explained that the OSCE chief expressed his hope that the coming period will experience organizing joint activities on the priority issues of the two parties. He added that Greminger reiterated the OSCE's readiness to contribute to the process of building the technical capacities of Arab cadres, especially in the field of dealing with security challenges.
