President performs Ground Breaking ceremony of Naulong Dam

 

Quetta, February 28, 2013 (PPI-OT): President Asif Ali Zardari today performed the ground breaking ceremony of Naulong Dam Project here in Quetta on his return from Tehran.

The ground-breaking ceremony was witnessed by Governor Balochistan, ministers, parliamentarians, senior Government officials and the elite of the area.

Spokesperson to the President Senator Farhatullah Babar said that Naulong dam, located on Mula river in Jhal Magsi is being constructed with an estimated cost of Rs. 18 billion to conserve flood water of the river for the irrigation purposes, hydro power generation and socio-economic uplift and poverty reduction of the area.

Senator Babar said that the President on the occasion said that that the construction of various dams across the country will usher into a new era of socio-economic development for the country by preserving the scarce water resources, mitigation of floods, promoting forestry and fisheries, creation of job opportunities, women empowerment and most importantly significantly enhancing the power generation capacity of the country to meet the rising demands of energy of a rapidly growing population.

The President reiterated the commitment of the Government to make the country and especially Balochistan prosperous. He recounted various practical measures taken by the Government, including the Aghaz-e-Haqooq-e-Balochistan Package, the development of Gawadar port and initiating many other projects aimed at uplift of the people of Balochistan and to bring them at par with the people of the rest of the country.

The President said that the population of the country was rapidly growing which he said has given rise to new challenges in food security. He said that we have to bring more and more areas under cultivation. It calls for building dams to store water for irrigation and also calls for introducing modern irrigation techniques, the President continued.

He said that the Government was building mega water projects on main rivers. It also plans to build small and medium-sized dams all over the country. These dams, he said, will bring barren lands under cultivation in the far flung areas. Naulong dam, the President said, is one such project to benefit the people of Balochistan. He said that this will usher in a new era of development in the province. Vast lands will be brought under cultivation. He said that the construction of the dam will generate low-cost hydro power.

According to prepared text of his remarks, the President said that the present Government was working on more than 20 hydro projects. These projects, he said, will store water as well generate hydro power.

The President said that these projects would generate 21000 mega watts of electricity. In addition they will have water storage capacity of 13 million acre feet. He said that these projects are vital for the economic development of the country. The President said that we have already started the mega hydro project of Basha Dam. The credit for this mega project goes to this Government, said the President.

On this occasion while commending the Ministry of Water and Power and WAPDA the President also urged them to step up work on various water and power projects and expressed the hope that the projects will be completed on time in accordance with schedule.
