Open manholes pose grave danger to citizens of Karachi: Misbahuddin Farid

 

Karachi, February 05, 2013 (PPI-OT): Open manholes pose a grave danger to the citizens of Karachi specially adolescence and it is one of our utmost priorities to ensure public safety, said Managing Director Karachi Water and Sewerage Board Misbahuddin Farid during an important meeting. He directed that all dues pertaining main-hole covers and bamboos must be paid, main-hole covers must be stocked and stock registers must be maintained.

Managing Director KW and SB recently visited the main-hole cover production site for inspection. Chief Engineer Ghulam Qadir and Mohammad Arif were also present on this occasion. Inspecting the casting, cube testing and other phases of production he directed Chief Engineers to ensure that the quality of production is maintained at all times. He said that poorly made manhole covers and open manholes pose a threat to the citizens.

He directed them to maintain a stock record and that covers must be issued with the signature of concerned engineer only. Expressing his concerns about the financial problem he said that manhole covers must be stocked in ample quantity to avoid any shortfall due to lack of funds. He also directed that dues pertaining manhole covers and bamboos must be paid immediately so that the production runs smoothly.

Issuing directives to DMD Finance he said that KW and SB is a public service institution and public safety is one of our utmost priorities therefore any incompetence in this regard would not be tolerated. During the meeting he further directed that all manholes in the city especially those around schools, mosques, religious institutes and play grounds, must be covered.

During the inspection visit, on the reports of encroachment on KW and SB land with the production site, he visited the illegal furniture market and directed that the land must be recovered on priority basis. He also visited the Treatment Plant (Water Lagoon) situated in North East Karachi and the 25 acres land allocated for the treatment plant.

Taking safety precautions he ordered that the land must be locked down and deployed a security guard on this land. He further Directed Chief Engineer WTM that, to ensure better provision of water supply facilities to the citizens, immediate measures must be taken for the maintenance and repair of the water lagoon.
