Managing Director Karachi Water Sewerage Board concerned over excavation of sand and gravel from Malir River

Karachi, February 19, 2013 (PPI-OT): Managing Director Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KW and SB) Misbahuddin Farid has expressed his concerns over excavation of sand and gravel from Maleer Naddi. Despite repeated reminders mafia is excavating gravel and sand near water supply bulk lines, siphons and conduits bringing water to the city from Greater Karachi Water Supply System K-II, K-III and Dumlotte, he added.

Moreover, he said that as per engineering and safety rules these water supply lines must be under the ground, however mafia uses heavy dumpers and loaders for the excavation leaving the installations open on the ground and prone to any damage.

M.D KW and SB Misbahuddin Farid has written several letters to Officials and Police to take strict action against the mafia to stop the theft once and for all. Ignoring the Section-144 mafia is still actively excavating gravel and sand exposing the infrastructure, making it prone to destruction during the rainy season.

The 84-inch diameter main lines, supplying water to Karachi from River Indus, pass through Gaddap and Malir Towns. These lines must be underground at all times. However, due to the excavation lines at Dumlottee Conduit No.3, Conduit Interconnection, Dumlottee No.8, Haji Noor Muhammad Goth, Dar Saachno, Bakhshani Chunnu, Link road No. 8 and 9 are now completely out of the ground.

M.D KW and SB taking strict notice of the situation directed Deputy Managing Director Technical Services (DMD-TS) Iftikhar Ahmed Khan to survey the areas and take immediate actions to cover the Supply Lines and Conduits for the safety of infrastructure.

M.D KW and SB has informed CCPO Karachi about the gravity of the situation and requested him to secure the lines and conduits to ensure that the supply to Karachi is not disrupted at any time. Furthermore, Home Department, I.G Sindh, D.G Rangers and other concerned officials have been informed time and again.

He hoped that to secure the water supply system officials would take this important matter seriously and eliminate the gravel and sand stealing mafia for good.
