Kashmiri students attacked in Jhansi, 3 injured

Srinagar, February 03, 2013 (PPI-OT): At least three Kashmiri students at the Bundelkhand University in Jhansi city of Indian state of Uttar Pradesh were injured when hooligans attacked them after barging into their hostel. A group of Kashmiri students told media men in Srinagar on phone from Jhansi that over 50 men armed with knives, swords and country made pistols, some of them drunk, barged into the hostel in Shivaji Nagar of Jhansi around 11:30 pm Thursday and went on a rampage. “The hooligans thrashed the students after breaking the doors,” they said.

The three students, Gulzar of Pulwama, Aamir of Kulgam and Maqsood of Zanigam, Budgam, suffered injuries in head, legs and hands in the attack, they said, adding that the injured were removed to the nearby hospital, where Gulzar received four stitches for the head injury.

“On Thursday night, a local student was beaten inside the hostel by some hooligans. When they left, another group of goons appeared in the hostel and attacked Kashmiri students. We locked ourselves in the room and took refuge in kitchen and bathrooms. But the goons broke the door of one of the rooms where they thrashed the three Kashmiri students to the pulp,” the students said. The hooligans were brandishing swords, sticks, hockey sticks, and a few had country made pistols. They were abusing us. We were helpless, they added.

The student said that on Friday they went for the prayers. “On return, we found that one of our rooms was robbed. Two bags with original certificates, clothes, and some money had been taken away. We suspect the hand of goons who attacked us the previous night,” they stated.

The students said that they did not approach police for fear of reprisal from the goons. “Everyone knows how unsafe Kashmiris are in Indian states. Seeking help from police would have invited the wrath of the hooligans. It would have added to our woes,” they added.

This is the second incident in less than 10 days when Kashmiri students have been assaulted in north India. On January 22, two Kashmiri students undergoing engineering courses at E-Max Group of Institutions in Bardoli area in Haryana were assaulted by hooligans.
