JKLF holds candlelight protest in Srinagar

Srinagar, February 03, 2013 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) organized a candlelight sit-in in Srinagar to protest against the miserable plight of illegally detained Kashmiris languishing in different jails. Hundreds of people participated in the sit-in held at Madina Chowk in Maisuma area of Srinagar.

They raised slogans in favour of freedom, martyrs, prisoners and in support of the return of mortal remains of prominent Kashmiri liberation leader, Muhammad Maqbool Butt, from Tihar Jail of New Delhi to the occupied territory.

The sit-in was attended by liberation leaders and activists including Bashir Ahmad Butt and Javed Ahmad Mir, besides relatives of martyrs and prisoners. Before and after the sit-in, processions were taken out from Madina Chowk to Maqbool Manzil in Srinagar.

Addressing the protesters, Bashir Ahmad Butt said, “The path of struggle and sacrifices rendered by Shaheed Muhammad Maqbool Butt is our way. We are the torchbearers of these sacrifices and struggle and will keep our struggle on till the achievement of the goal.” He pointed out that the harsh verdicts against the Kashmiris were nothing but a torture policy of New Delhi. Despite these undemocratic tactics, Kashmiris will keep alive the flame of freedom struggle, he added.

Bashir Butt said, the 11th February, the day of martyrdom of Muhammad Butt reminds the Kashmiri people about the sacrifices of the great leader who kissed gallows but never compromised on the struggle and principles.

“Maqbool Butt was hanged undemocratically and after his martyrdom his body was not handed over to Kashmiris. Instead it was buried inside Tihar jail, Delhi, and still remains there. Kashmiris have been for last three decades demanding for the return of his mortal remains for his decent burial with honour and dignity.

A grave has been kept reserved for him at Mazar-e-Shuhada Eidgah in Srinagar,” he stated, calling for complete shutdown in the territory on 11th February. He also expressed serious concern over the plight of illegally detained Kashmiris languishing in different jails.
